1.
Stamps
Singapore is a multi-cultural country, where the races, Chinese, Malays, Indians as well as Eurasians live in harmony. As each race celebrates its own individual festivals, the country comes together to rejoice as one.
These stamps depict the various festivals we celebrate as Singaporeans, festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas. The celebration of these festivals is the foundation of our multi-cultural environment, strengthening ties as well as the bonds among the races. These celebrations are strong indicators of our cultural wellbeing as the entire country basks in the festive mood. Through the celebration of these cultural festivals, we Singaporeans learn to embrace and value their own cultural traditions as well as the traditions of others, regardless of race, language or religion.
It is perhaps this
feature that makes us uniquely Singaporean the idea that we are all different
by nature, yet common in identity. Strength in diversity is our greatest virtue.
2. Mascot
For the first time in 9 rounds of ICP conventions, ICP 2009 featured an official convention mascot.
Taking the form of a Lion, the mascot represents Singapore and the embodiment of our country's historic past. The name "Singa Pura", ("Lion City"), was given to us in the 13th century by a prince from Palembang when he was shipwrecked on the island and saw a creature that he believed was a lion, a bit of history that is still reflected in one of our cultural symbols today - the merlion.
